Etymology: Originally dependant, < French dépendant (14th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), present participle of dépendre to hang down, depend: from the 16th cent. often assimilated to Latin dēpendēnt-em, and now usually so spelt, the form in -ant being almost obsolete in the adjective, though retained in the noun.
