Etymology: Middle English delle , corresponding to Middle Dutch and Middle Low German delle , modern Dutch del , Middle High German and modern German telle < West Germanic *daljâ- or *deljôn- (feminine), derivative of *dalo- , Old Low German dal , dale n.1; root meaning ‘deep or low place.’ Compare also Gothic ibdalja, and Old English æfdæl, descent. (Dell bears nearly the same etymological relation to dale, that den does to dean.)

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: dell n.1
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps an extended use of dell n.1 (with allusion to the vagina).Alternatively, the female forename Doll , pet-form of Dorothy (see doll n.1), has sometimes been compared; with this suggestion, perhaps compare also Nell , pet-form of Eleanor and Helen (see nelly n.2).
