Etymology: < amble v. + -er suffix1. In sense 1 after Old French ambleeur horse that is inclined to amble (end of the 13th cent.; already in 12th cent. as adjective, designating such a horse or other riding animal).With the form ambuloure compare -our suffix. Also attested early as a surname; compare Johannes Ambeler (1441), Alexander Ambler (1475).
1. A horse or other quadruped that is inclined to go at an amble (amble n. 1), esp. in preference to trotting. More generally: a horse or other quadruped that moves at a slow, easy, or leisurely pace.
