Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French defectueux; Latin defectuosus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French defectueux, deffectueux (French défectueux ) having defects, faulty, imperfect (1336), and its probable etymon (ii) post-classical Latin defectuosus at fault (from the first half of the 14th cent. in British and continental sources), imperfect (15th cent.) < classical Latin dēfectus defect n. + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Old Occitan defectuos, Spanish defectuoso (15th cent.), and also Italian difettoso (a1370; beginning of the 14th cent. as †difettuoso).
