Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on an Icelandic lexical item. Etymons: all adj., father n.
Etymology: < all adj. + father n., after Old Icelandic al-fǫðr, epithet of Odin, later also used of the Christian God.With sense b compare earlier father n. 2. Sense c shows a modern learned transfer of the epithet to the Greek god equivalent to Odin. The usual epithet in ancient Greek is πατήρ father n.
Chiefly with the. The father of all, the universal father; a name given to various supreme gods, esp. when considered as creator or progenitor of the human race, spec.
a. (A title of) Odin (Woden), the supreme god and creator in Scandinavian mythology.
