Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: defame v., -er suffix1; French diffameur.
Etymology: Partly (i) < defame v. + -er suffix1, and partly (ii) < Middle French diffameur, dyffameur (c1360; also 1544 as deffameur ) < diffamer defame v. + -eur -eur suffix. Compare defamator n. and the foreign-language forms cited at that entry.With forms in -our, -ur compare -our suffix.
A person who defames someone or something; (Law) a person accused or guilty of defamation.
