Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French diffamatif ; defamation n., -ive suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms < Middle French diffamatif (1492 in an apparently isolated attestation in the passage translated in quot. 1502) < diffamat- (in diffamation defamation n.) + -if -ive suffix. In β. forms re-formed < defamat- (in defamation n.) + -ive suffix. Compare earlier defamatory adj., defamous adj.
