Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alphonsinus (15th cent. in tabulae Alphonsinae Alfonsine tables) < Alphonsus , the name in Latin of Alfonso X (1226–84), King of Castile + classical Latin -īnus -ine suffix¹.In the β. forms after Alfonso, the usual modern spelling of the King's name in English and Spanish; compare also Spanish alfonsino, adjective (1586 in tablas alfonsinas, designating the astronomical tables prepared for Alfonso X; 1271 with allusion to earlier kings with the same forename). Compare also French tables alphonsines (1703).
