Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Alphonsinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alphonsinus (15th cent. in tabulae Alphonsinae Alfonsine tables) < Alphonsus , the name in Latin of Alfonso X (1226–84), King of Castile + classical Latin -īnus -ine suffix1.In the β. forms after Alfonso, the usual modern spelling of the King's name in English and Spanish; compare also Spanish alfonsino, adjective (1586 in tablas alfonsinas, designating the astronomical tables prepared for Alfonso X; 1271 with allusion to earlier kings with the same forename). Compare also French tables alphonsines (1703).

1. Chiefly in plural. One of the scholars who prepared the astronomical tables for Alfonso X in Toledo in about 1272. Also: one of the followers or advocates of the astronomical system set out in these tables (see sense B.).
