单词 aleut
释义

Aleutn.adj.

Brit. /ˈaljuːt/, /ˈalɪuːt/, /əˈl(j)uːt/, U.S. /əˈlut/, /ˈæliˌut/
Inflections: Plural Aleuts, unchanged.
Forms: 1800s– Aleut, 1800s– Aleute.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Russian. Etymons: German Aleute; Russian aleut.
Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1821) < German Aleute (noun) member of a people native to or inhabiting the Aleutian Islands and south-western Alaska (1777 or earlier), subsequently < its etymon Russian aleut (1769 or earlier; earlier in aleutskij , adjective: see Aleutian adj.), of uncertain and disputed origin. With use as noun denoting the language (see sense A. 2) compare German Aleutisch , denoting the language (1800 or earlier), use as noun of aleutisch of or relating to the Aleutian Islands, the Aleuts, or their language (see Aleutian adj.). Compare earlier Aleutian n., Aleutian adj.A suggested derivation of the Russian name < Aleut allíthuh community cannot be substantiated. The self-designation of some groups is unangan, literally ‘coastal people’. In both Russian and English, the name is often used to include the related Yupik peoples of south-western Alaska; compare Yupik Alutiiq, modern self-designation ( < Russian).
