Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese akamatsu.
Etymology: < Japanese akamatsu (1847 or earlier) < aka red + matsu pine (see matsu n.). Compare red pine n. 1(c).
The Japanese red pine, Pinus densiflora, a valuable ornamental and timber tree with reddish wood; the timber itself. Cf. o-matsu n.
