Etymology: < Sioux (Santee) Dakhóta, self-designation (corresponding to Teton Lakhóta Lakota n.), originally a specific use of dakhóta friend, ally, apparently < a verb with the sense ‘to be friendly’ (now also ‘to be Dakota, to be Sioux’). Compare earlier Santee n.1, Yankton n., and Sioux n.
