Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. acuto-chronic Brit. /əˌkjuːtə(ʊ)ˈkrɒnɪk/, U.S. /əˌkjudoʊˈkrɑnɪk/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: acute adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < acute adj. + -o- connective. Compare acuti- comb. form.Found in a small number of formations illustrated below.
