Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Portuguese alfonso, afonsa.
Etymology: < Portuguese alfonso, variant of afonsa (1782 as affonsa), probably < the name of Alphonso (also Afonso) de Albuquerque (1453–1515), Portuguese explorer and ruler of Portuguese India.
More fully Alphonso mango. A small yellow or orange mango variety native to and chiefly cultivated in western India, which is highly prized for its sweet, perfumed flesh; (also) the tree which bears this fruit.
