Etymology: < air n.1 + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French aireux , haireux of the nature of air (16th cent.), (of weather) windy (c1570), French †aereux in uncertain sense (1611 in Cotgrave, who glosses it as ‘ayrie, full of ayre’). Compare earlier aerial adj., aired adj.2, airish adj., airlike adj., airy adj.
Obsolete. rare.
