Etymology: < quarter n. + staff n.1, probably so called because the staff was from a tree of a certain size cleft in four; compare quot. 1590 at sense 1 and earlier quarter cleft n. 1.
Now chiefly historical.
1. A stout pole, from six to eight feet (approx. 2 to 2.5 metres) long and tipped with iron, used as a weapon esp. formerly in rural England.
