单词 curt
释义

curtadj.1

Brit. /kəːt/, U.S. /kərt/
Etymology: < Latin curtus cut or broken short, mutilated, abridged, which became in late Latin and Romanic the ordinary word for ‘short’: Italian corto, Spanish corto, Provençal cort, French court. The Latin adjective was apparently adopted at an early date in German, giving Old Saxon and Old Frisian curt (Middle Dutch cort , Dutch, Middle Low German, and Low German kort , whence also modern Icelandic korta , Swedish and Danish kort ), Old High German kurt , kurz (Middle High German and modern German kurz ), where the word has taken the place of an original Germanic *skurt- , in Old High German scurz , in Old English scort , sceort , short adj., n., and adv. But the latter was retained in English.
