Etymology: < pit n.1 + a second element of uncertain origin, perhaps a variant (with initial front glide) of hacker n., or perhaps < yack , variant of yark v.2 (compare sense 3 at that entry) + -er suffix1.With form in -or compare -or suffix.
English regional (north-eastern). Frequently depreciative.
