Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French croquignole.
Etymology: < French croquignole flip, flick (15th cent. in Middle French), of uncertain origin; perhaps < croquer to crunch, bite (see croque monsieur n.); compare -ole suffix1. The name of the game appears to have originated in English, being attested in Canadian French only from 1901.Compare the following earlier examples in English of croquignole denoting a small crispy biscuit, borrowed from French croquignole in the same sense (1545):1834 J. Porter Carême's Royal Parisian Pastrycook 341 Work the whole four times, give your croquignoles the form of cloves, and finish them as those à la Chartres.1858 Household Encycl. I. 378/2 Make these ingredients into a paste, and form the croquignoles into the shape and size of olives.
Chiefly Canadian.
A board game in which participants take turns to flick wooden discs on to the circular playing surface, attempting to displace opponents' pieces and land in the higher-scoring central sections.
