Etymology: < French croquignole flip, flick (15th cent. in Middle French), of uncertain origin; perhaps < croquer to crunch, bite (see croque monsieur n.); compare -ole suffix¹. The name of the game appears to have originated in English, being attested in Canadian French only from 1901.Compare the following earlier examples in English of croquignole denoting a small crispy biscuit, borrowed from French croquignole in the same sense (1545):1834 J.
