Etymology: < critical adj. + rationalism n.Compare German kritischer Rationalismus (1822 or earlier; 1940s or earlier in the writings of Karl Popper).
Philosophy.
The theory that a hypothesis can be considered empirical or scientific if it is falsifiable, i.e. capable of being refuted by further evidence; the belief that scientific theories cannot be proved true inductively, only confirmed provisionally by the failure of further testing to uncover evidence that falsifies them.Chiefly in or with reference to the theories of Karl Popper.
