Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Danish regional (Jutland) kassen , kasing the dried dung of farm animals, used as fuel (19th cent.) < kase (also kasse ) pile, heap, especially of something worthless or dirty, specifically cow dung (c1700; cognate with Old Icelandic kǫs pile, heap: see cast v.) + -ing -ing suffix3). Compare slightly earlier casard n.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈcasing.
English regional (northern) in later use.
