Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymons: Scottish Gaelic crannachan, cranachan.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic crannachan (also occasionally as cranachan) Halloween dish of half-churned cream (1911 in Dwelly; 1832 or earlier denoting a kind of crane and a kind of churn), probably < crann beam, bar, tree ( < the same Celtic base as Welsh pren tree, piece of timber: see cambren n.) + -achan, suffix forming nouns ( < -ach, suffix forming adjectives + -an, suffix forming diminutives).
Scottish.
A dessert typically made with whipped cream, whisky, oatmeal, honey, and berries (esp. raspberries).
