Etymology: < Malay Bugis (in a text composed c1625) < Buginese Wugi, Ugi, a self designation.In β. forms probably after Buginese forms without final s . With the form Buggese compare -ese suffix. Compare also Buginese n. Compare an earlier use as the name of the country of the Bugis people:1615 in W. Foster Lett. received by E. India Co. (1899) III. 152 [All these in the kingdom of Macassar..besides the island countries as] Bugies, Mander [and] Tollova.
