Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French crinière.
Etymology: Apparently < Middle French criniere, French crinière mane of a horse (1556) < crin (horse) hair (see crin n.) + -ière (compare -ier suffix); however, this specific sense is first attested later in French (1611 in Cotgrave), and may show an English development. Compare earlier crinet n. 2. The French form was apparently reborrowed in the 18th cent.
