Etymology: < ancient Greek κρίνον lily (see crinum n.) + -ite suffix1, after scientific Latin Crinoidea (see crinoid adj. and n.). N.E.D. (1893) gives the pronunciation as (kri·nəit, krəi-) /ˈkrɪnaɪt/, /kraɪ-/.
Palaeontology. Obsolete. rare.
A fossil crinoid; an encrinite.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin crīnītus.
Etymology: < classical Latin crīnītus having (long) hair, resembling a head of hair in some respect, (of luminous bodies) having a hairlike coma or tail (especially in sidus crīnītum , stella crīnīta , lit. crinite star, denoting a comet) < crīnis hair (see crine n.) + -ītus -ite suffix2. Compare Middle French crinite (of a comet) having a hairlike coma or tail (15th cent.), long-haired (1557).
1. Designating a ‘star’ with a hairlike coma or tail, i.e. a comet. Obsolete.
