Etymology: < Italian larghetto (apparently early 18th cent. as a musical direction; 14th cent. as adjective in sense ‘somewhat broad’) < largo largo adv. + -etto (see -et suffix1).

As a musical direction: at a fairly slow tempo; slower than adagio but not as slow as largo; in a slow and dignified manner.

1786 T. Busby Compl. Dict. Music Larghetto,..a word specifying a time not quite so slow as that denoted by Largo, of which word it is the diminutive.
1880 E. Prout in G. Grove Dict. Music I. 65/1 Andante is a quicker rate of movement than larghetto, but..is slower than allegretto.
1890 F. Niecks Frederick Chopin I. xiii. 203 (note) The slow movements of Chopin's concertos are marked Larghetto.
1934 Boston Symphony Orchestra Programme 53 55 In Haydn's catalogue, the tempo is given as Larghetto, but this is probably due to some error.
2003 J. Irving Mozart's Piano Concertos iv. 72 (note) The Romance of K.466 has no separate tempo marking, but is normally played largetto.
