Forms: Also 1500s–1600s crau- (Scottish), 1500s–1600s crawdoun (Scottish); 1700s–1800s craddant (dialect).
Etymology: Derivation uncertain: possibly the same word as crathon n., but apparently associated in Scots with craw to crow and down; several quots. refer to or suggest a cock that will not fight.
Obsolete exc. dialect.
