Etymology: < cottage n. + industry n.
1. A variety of commercial activity or trade, esp. manufacturing, which is carried out partly or wholly in people's homes, rather than in a factory, communal workshop, etc.; (as mass noun) industry of this type.Earlier examples such as quot. 1796 appear to illustrate the sense ‘industry (sense 3 or 4) as practised in cottages’, rather than a fixed collocation.
