单词 corrody
释义

corrodycorodyn.

/ˈkɒrədi/
Forms: Middle English–1500s cor(r)ydie, Middle English–1600s cor(r)odie, cor(r)odye, 1500s corradye, 1600s–1700s corredy; (Middle English corride, plural corodes, corodeis, corodise, 1600s plural corrodice; 1600s colede, 1700s colady); Middle English– corody, 1500s– corrody.
Etymology: < medieval Latin corrōdium, also -rādium , variants of corrēdium , earlier conrēdium , < Old French conrei(d , conroi , modern French corroi < Romanic type *conrēdo : see conrey n. Among the numerous other medieval Latin forms were conregium, -ragium, corrogium, conreium, correium, courreium, also correda, corredum. Those in o, a, were perhaps due to Parisian French conroi, Anglo-Norman conrai. The primary sense was ‘preparation, outfit’, hence ‘provision’.
a. Provision or allowance for maintenance, aliment; pension. ‘Originally the right of free quarters due from the vassal to the lord on his circuit; but later applied esp. to certain contributions of food, provisions, etc., paid annually by religious houses..Sometimes the contribution might be commuted, and then it would be practically undistinguishable from an annuity or pension’ (C. Plummer Fortescue Notes pp. 337–8). Little in use since the Reformation; the legal antiquaries of the 17th cent. dealt with it as an obsolete word, and it is now chiefly a historical term, though surviving as the name of some local charities.
