Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin cordātus, cordatus.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < classical Latin cordātus intelligent, sensible, judicious < cord- , cor heart, in sense of judgement + -ātus -ate suffix2; and partly (in sense 3) < post-classical Latin cordatus heart-shaped (1651 in Bauhin, or earlier), perhaps after classical Latin ōvātus egg-shaped (see ovate adj.).
1. Wise, prudent, sagacious. Obsolete.
