Etymology: In sense 1 < alburnum n. or its etymon classical Latin alburnum. In sense 2 < post-classical Latin alburnus, kind of fish, perhaps the bleak (4th cent.), use as noun of masculine of classical Latin alburnus white, gleaming (see alburnum n.), so called on account of its silvery-white appearance; compare scientific Latin alburnus, used as a specific name of the bleak by Linnaeus ( Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) 325), and later adopted (in form Alburnus) as a genus name by Rafinesque ( Western Rev. & Misc. Mag. (1820) May 236).
