Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: a int.1, hoy int.
Etymology: Apparently < a int.1 + hoy int. Compare earlier ahey int.With the variant o-hoy compare O int. With use as verb compare the following earlier instance of ahoying ( < ahoy int. + -ing suffix1) in an apparently isolated attestation: 1846 E. Lloyd Visit Antipodes iii. 26 ‘Aye, aye, sir,’ is responded in a deep voice from the forecastle, and all the ahoying consequent upon such an order goes on.
Originally and chiefly Nautical. Now archaic or humorous.
