Origin: A borrowing from Kikuyu. Etymon: Kikuyu ahoi.
Etymology: < Kikuyu ahoi, < a- , plural class prefix denoting people + -hoi (see muhoi n.). Compare muhoi n.Originally a plural, but also used as a singular in English (sometimes with a secondary plural form in -s ). The Kikuyu singular is mũhoi (see muhoi n.).
East African.
A body or class of people who have been given the right to cultivate a plot of land without payment; tenants at will. Also as a count noun: a tenant of this type. Cf. muhoi n. (the usual singular form).
