Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Aharonov, Bohm.
Etymology: < the names of Yakir Aharonov (born 1932), Israeli physicist, and David Joseph Bohm (1917–92), U.S.-born physicist, who predicted the phenomenon in 1959 ( Physical Rev. 115 485).The phenomenon had previously been predicted by W. Ehrenberg and R. E. Siday in 1949 ( Proc. Physical Soc. B. 62 8), as was later acknowledged by Aharonov and Bohm in 1961 ( Physical Rev. 123 1511).
Physics.
attributive. Designating an effect whereby charged particles travelling round a region containing magnetic flux acquire a phase shift of their wave function proportional to the quantity of linked flux, even if the particles themselves are confined to regions where the magnetic field is negligible. Also: of or relating to this effect.
