French continence , or < Latin continēntia , a holding back, repression (of passions, desires, etc.), also in late Latin ‘tenor or contents (of a work)’, < continēnt- , present participle of continēre to contain v.: see -ence suffix. A doublet of countenance n.1, Old French contenance , which represents a development of branch II.
