Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Action directe.
Etymology: < French Action directe, literally ‘direct action’ (1979 as the name of this group; 1928 or earlier in general sense ‘action by a political or religious group in demonstration of its beliefs’) < action action n. + directe direct adj.
Now chiefly historical.
An extreme left-wing French terrorist group active esp. in the 1980s.
