Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin agrestis , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin agrestis (see agrest adj.) + -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin agresticus (13th cent. in a British source). Compare agrestical adj. and earlier agrest adj., agrestial adj.
Chiefly literary.
Of or belonging to the countryside; rural, rustic. Hence in extended use: coarse, uncouth, rough; (also) simple, unsophisticated.
