Etymology: < Middle French anthracosis (1585 in the passage translated in quot. ?1587; French †anthracose subsequently from 1721 in this sense) and its etymon post-classical Latin anthracosis carbuncle or ulcer, especially of the eye (6th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek ἀνθράκωσις carbuncle, in Byzantine Greek also carbuncle or ulcer, especially of the eye < ancient Greek ἀνθρακ- , ἄνθραξ (see anthrax n.) + -ωσις -osis suffix.
Medicine. Obsolete.
A carbuncle, boil, or ulcer, esp. one on or near the eye; disease characterized by the presence of such lesions. Cf. anthrax n. 1.

Accumulation of carbon particles in the lungs and certain other tissues, typically resulting from chronic inhalation of coal dust or smoke; lung disease attributed to this; an instance of such accumulation or disease. Cf. anthracosilicosis n.Anthracosis alone is now not believed to cause serious damage to the lungs.
