单词 -orium
释义

-oriumsuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. preventorium n.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin -ōrium, -ōrius.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ōrium, neuter singular ending of adjectives in -ōrius (see -orious suffix, -ory suffix2), used as noun in the sense ‘place for or belonging to, thing used for, requisite’, as in audītōrium place for hearing (see auditorium n.), repositōrium dumb-waiter (see repository n.), and post-classical Latin scriptorium writing-room (see scriptorium n.), sensorium organ of sensation (sensorium n.). Compare -ory suffix1.This termination is found in words (in both senses) borrowed from Latin in the 18th cent., e.g. auditorium n., ostensorium n., and 19th cent., e.g. aspersorium n., natatorium n. It occurs from the first half of the 19th cent. (in sense 1) in English formations on Latin bases, the earliest apparently being sanctorium n., followed by sanatorium n. (which probably set the pattern for later formations) and crematorium n. The earliest formation with an English first element was probably communitorium n. (first half of the 19th cent.); several of this kind were formed during the 20th cent., e.g. abortorium n., preventorium n., Exploratorium n. English formations in sense 2 are mostly uncommon words which arose in the 19th cent., e.g. compressorium n., digitorium n.
