Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French amountance ; amount v., -ance suffix.
Etymology: Either (i) < Anglo-Norman amountance, amontance, amuntance sum, amount (a1325 or earlier, in the phrase a l'amontance de to the amount of; compare Middle French (Namur) amontance quantity (15th cent.)) < amunter amount v. + -ance -ance suffix, or (ii) directly < amount v. + -ance suffix. Compare earlier mountance n. Compare also amountment n.Compare post-classical Latin amuntantia extent (13th cent. in a British source).
Obsolete. rare.
