Etymology: < post-classical Latin amortificare, admortificare to alienate in mortmain (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + post-classical Latin mortificare mortify v. Compare earlier amortize v.Compare Dutch †amortificeeren to amortize (1542). Compare also Anglo-Norman amortefier to deaden (13th cent. or earlier in medical contexts).
Law. Obsolete.
transitive. To transfer (property) to a corporation in mortmain (mortmain n. 1); = amortize v. 1.
