Origin: Probably formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Coney Island hot dog at Coney Island n.
Etymology: Probably short for Coney Island hot dog at Coney Island n. Compare coney n.3This dish appears to have originated in the Upper Midwestern United States, where the name of Coney Island (or of the hot dog of the same name: see Coney Island n.) appears in the names of various restaurants which serve it. Early examples include the American Coney Island Restaurant, and Lafayette Coney Island Restaurant, Detroit, Michigan (both founded 1917), and Todoroff’s Original Coney Island Restaurant, Jackson, Michigan (founded 1914).
U.S.
