Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin algorista.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin algorista (12th or 13th cent.) < algorismus algorism n., on the analogy of Latin nouns in -ista -ist suffix corresponding to nouns in -ismus -ism suffix.
1. A person skilled in the use of Arabic numerals in arithmetic (cf. algorism n. 1). Chiefly historical.
