Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish bota; Portuguese bota.
Etymology: Partly < Spanish bota, and partly < Portuguese bota (for both, see butt n.4).In sense 2 originally via German Bota (1799 in the passage translated in quot. 1802, or earlier).
1. Originally: a measure of capacity for liquid, used esp. in Spain and Portugal and varying according to locality and the nature of the contents. In later use: a large cask for wine or other liquids, the capacity of which varies according to the contents and locality. Cf. butt n.4 1a.
