Etymology: < classical Latin algificus that makes cold, chilling < algēre to be cold (see algid adj.) + -ficus -fic suffix. Compare earlier algifical adj.
rare before late 20th cent.
That makes cold; cooling, chilling; (in later use spec.) designating some north-facing talus slopes which have a chilling effect on the microclimate of the area around their foot.
