Etymology: < Sanskrit ālāpa (also with vernacular pronunciation ālāp), specific use of ālāpa act of speaking to, conversation, speech < ālap to speak to, address, to converse ( < ā- towards + lap- to speak, chatter, ultimately of imitative origin).Compare also the following earlier example of an independent and apparently isolated borrowing of the Sanskrit word in a rare specific sense denoting a musical scale:1809 Asiatic Researches (London ed.) 9 463 The Múrchhanás are all personified, and distinguished by names... Those of Gaudhára Gráma [sic], are: 1st. Mandrá,..7th Alapa.
