Etymology: < scientific Latin Alamosaurus, genus name (C. W. Gilmore: see quot. 1922) < the name of the Ojo Alamo Formation , a sandstone formation in New Mexico, in which fossils were discovered + scientific Latin -saurus -saurus comb. form.The Ojo Alamo Formation was named after the trading post of the same name near Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, < Spanish ojo hole, eye + American Spanish alamo cottonwood tree (in Spanish denoting the poplar).

Palaeontology.

A genus of very large sauropod dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous period, known from fossils in south-western North America; a dinosaur of this genus.
