Etymology: < French apanage (appanage , appennage ), < apaner to endow with the means of subsistence, Provençal apanar < Latin *appanāre , adpanāre (common in medieval Latin), < ad to + panis bread: see -age suffix. The French was often spelt appanage in 15–16th cent., and regularly appennage in 17th (Cotgrave); whence also the same forms in English.
