Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Agometer.
Etymology: < German Agometer (1842), shortened < Volt'agometer (1842) < Volt volt n. + ancient Greek ἄγειν to lead (see agon n.) + -ometer -ometer comb. form.
Obsolete.
A type of rheostat in which a column of mercury of variable length is used to vary the electrical resistance.

1843 C. Wheatstone in Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 133 308 It appears that the idea of constructing an instrument of this kind had also occurred to Professor Jacobi of St. Petersburgh... This instrument, which he has since called an Agometer, differs in mechanical construction from mine..but its principle is the same.
1855 Chambers Jrnl. 4 127 A newly invented instrument called an agometer.
1878 Encycl. Brit. VIII. 45 In the quicksilver agometer of Müller..the resistance is formed by a column of mercury of variable length.
