Origin: A borrowing from Yoruba. Etymon: Yoruba agogo.
Etymology: < Yoruba agogo handbell, gong, chime, probably ultimately of imitative origin.Compare the following earlier example of the Yoruba word in an English context:1852 S. A. Crowther Vocab. Yoruba Lang. 14 Agogo, a bell, an hour.
A handbell of West African origin, consisting of two or more joined cones struck with a stick or rod, used as a percussion instrument in African and Latin rituals and music.

1889 Jrnl. Manch. Geogr. Soc. 5 285 The beating of time on some stick or on their [sc. Yorubas] tongueless native bell called agogo.
1892 C. R. Day in A. F. Mockler-Ferryman Up Niger xiii. 271 An instrument of iron, shaped somewhat like a bell, and called agogo, is also to be found. It is sounded by being struck with a metal bar, and is held suspended from the hand.
