Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -ārium.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ārium, forming nouns denoting a thing connected with or employed in, or a place for, what is denoted by the base, use as noun of neuter of adjectives in -ārius -ary suffix1. Attested in loans from classical Latin and post-classical Latin, especially terms relating to classical antiquities (e.g. antiquarium n., caldarium n., frigidarium n.) and ecclesiastical objects (e.g. orarium n.), and in scientific terms (e.g. planetarium n., plantarium n.), in which area it becomes productive from the 18th cent.
